For more than 20 years, Shirley Hughes' alcoholism and drug addiction fueled an out-of-control life, making it difficult to hold jobs or finish college. But about two years ago, Hughes discovered Meta House, a residential treatment center specifically designed to address the unique issues female abusers face as women and mothers.Meta House did the trick and Hughes, now a 44-year-old mother of three, says the therapists at the facility helped her to face many issues in her life that were underlying causes of her dependency. She is finishing college and hopes to become a drug and alcoholism counselor herself. So, Hughes was excited to be on hand Nov. 21 when Meta House hosted a gala to honor the 25 years Francine Feinberg has served as the center's executive director. The party was held at the Grain Exchange Room. Shirley wasn't the only successful Meta House graduate to come back for the Feinberg fete. Also there, said Feinberg, was Brozine Brown and her daughter Breonna Brown. Feinberg noted that Brozine's daughter Breonna was the first baby to be born at Meta House.
