Man charged in his daughter's near drowning

A man police say almost let his 14-month-old daughter drown in a hotel bathtub while he sat nearby drinking beer was charged Thursday with one count of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of child neglect.Gregory Knitter, 44, of Cornell, was caring for the child at a Super 8 hotel in Wauwatosa last Friday while his girlfriend, the 14-month-old's mother, visited her 3-year-old son at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The boy was recovering from heart surgery.According to a complaint, Knitter told police he filled his hotel room's tub with eight to ten inches of water and placed the girl in the water. He said he sat at a desk in the room where he could watch the child. He told police he looked away for 60 to 90 seconds, and that when he looked back, the girl was floating face down in the water.
